Here's the statistic the dating industry ignores: most single women over 40 say they aren't looking to actively date at all. The industry hears "no customers." We hear the truth underneath: they're not looking for what's being sold. Companionship — someone to eat with, travel with, laugh with, maybe more — was never on the menu.

Between "single and fine" and "seeking a serious relationship" sits the largest and least-served group in dating: women who would genuinely enjoy a person in their life — dinners, concerts, a road trip, affection, a hand to hold at a hard appointment — and who have no intention of merging households, finances, or last names ever again. Researchers are starting to call arrangements like this "living apart together." Most women just call it what I actually want.
Pew Research found that a majority of single women over 40 — about seven in ten — say they aren't currently looking to date, a rate far higher than men's. Read one way, that's disinterest. Read honestly, it's an indictment of the options: when "dating" means either a marriage audition or a hookup app with 25-year-old manners, opting out is the rational choice. Companionship isn't a smaller ask than dating. It's a different one — and no major platform has ever put it on the front door.
Why it disappears on the apps
Say "companionship" on a relationship platform and the algorithm hears "low intent" and buries you. Say it on a casual app and men hear a euphemism. Either way you end up translating your actual want into someone else's vocabulary — and attracting the mismatch that vocabulary invites. The fix isn't better translating. It's a platform where companionship is a first-class setting, stated plainly on your profile, changeable whenever your season changes, and combinable with anything else that's also true ("companionship" and "open to a relationship" can both be checked — plenty of the best relationships started as exactly that pair).
What companionship on your terms looks like
It looks like a standing Thursday with someone whose company you chose from a map of verified men, without ever having announced to your neighbors, your coworkers, or your adult children that you're "dating again." It looks like affection without an audit of where this is going. It looks like keeping your house, your finances, your mornings — and adding a person, in the amount you want a person. If it grows into more, that's yours to decide. If it never does, nothing failed.
Empty nest, gray divorce, widowhood, or simply done with marriage as an institution — the doorway doesn't matter. What matters is that wanting company without a contract is not a phase to be coached out of. It's a complete answer, and it deserved a platform a long time ago.
